System Requirements

To use Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3, your computer must meet the following specifications:

Windows Vista

·         Processor/RAM: Windows Vista hardware requirements

·         PC with a 933 Mhz or faster processor, 2 Ghz recommended

·         512 MB of RAM, 1 GB recommended

·         18 GB of available space on installation drive

·         1 GB of available space on system drive

·         DVD-ROM drive

·         Monitor that supports 1024 x 768 screen resolution with 16-bit color

Required Software

·         Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (except Express)

·         Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1

·         Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista

·          Windows Embedded CE 6.0

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Platform Builder Service Pack 1, available at the Microsoft Download Center.

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2

·         Microsoft Expression Blend 2 (to create and edit XAML layouts for the XAML Runtime API set)

Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or Windows XP Service Pack 2

·         Processor/RAM: Windows Embedded CE 6.0 hardware requirements

Required Software

·         Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (except Express)

·         Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Platform Builder Service Pack 1, available at the Microsoft Download Center.

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2

·         Microsoft Expression Blend 2 (to create and edit XAML layouts for the XAML Runtime API set)

Note   Expression Blend 2 is the only version that is supported for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3. For more information see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=163763.

Installing Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3

Important   To uninstall Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3, you must completely uninstall Windows Embedded CE 6.0. Before you install this release, you must back up any important data.

To install Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3

 

1.       Install Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2. For more information, see the Microsoft Download Center.

 

2.       Double-click the file Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3.msi.

 

3.       Install all Windows Embedded CE 6.0 monthly updates available at the Windows CE Developer Center.

 

Important   Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 installs all monthly updates through August 2009. You only need to install updates available for September 2009 and later.

 

To verify that you have installed the correct updates

 

1.       In Visual Studio 2005, on the Tools menu, point to Platform Builder for CE 6.0 and then click CE Update Check.

 

2.       In the CEUpdateCheck window, select the platforms that you have installed and then click Verify Updates.

 

3.       Updates that have been successfully installed have a green checkmark next to them. Updates that have not been successfully installed have a red X next to them. For a list of all updates for Windows Embedded CE 6.0, see the Windows CE Developer Center.

 

Installing Third-Party Components

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 includes optional third-party components you can install. If you have the DVD or an ISO, you can find third-party components under the directory “ThirdPartyProducts”. For information about downloading optional third-party components, see Getting Started with Windows Embedded CE.

To Install Tencent Mobile QQ 1.0 instant messenger

 

1.       Double-click the file ThirdPartyProducts/QQ/Setup.exe.

To Install File Viewers for Office 1997 through Office 2003 and PDF Files

 

1.       Double-click the file ThirdPartyProducts/Viewers/WesttekFileViewers6.exe.

Uninstalling Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3

To uninstall Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 and Windows Embedded CE 6.0

 

1.       Log on to Windows as an administrator.

 

2.       Use Add or Remove Programs to remove the following, in order:

·         Any optional third-party components, such as Tencent MobileQQ

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Service Pack 1

·         Windows Embedded CE 6.0

 

Building an Image with Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3

To create an OS design

1.       In Visual Studio 2005, on the File menu, point to New and then click Project.

2.       In the New Project dialog box, do the following:

a.       Under Project Types, select Platform Builder for CE 6.0.

b.      Under Visual Studio Installed Templates, select OS Design.

c.       In the Name field, type a name such as “CE_MyDesign.” The name cannot contain spaces.

d.      Click OK.

3.       In the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 OS Design Wizard, on the Welcome to the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 OS Design Wizard page, click Next.

4.       On the Board Support Packages page, in Available BSPs, select a BSP and then click Next.

5.       On the Design Templates page, from the Available Design Template list, select a design template and then click Next.

6.       On the Design Template Variants page, if design template variants are available, select the variant that you want to use and then click Next.

7.       If there is a selection of catalog items, select the items to include in your OS design and then click Next.

To accept all default options that appear, click Finish.

8.       On the OS Design Project Wizard Complete page of the wizard, to create the new OS design, click Finish.

9.       Add relevant SYSGEN variables or catalog items for new features that are available in Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3. The following new SYSGEN variables and catalog items are specific to Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3:

·         SYSGEN_TOUCHGESTURE (Single-Touch Gesture Recognition)

·         SYSGEN_GESTUREANIMATION (Gesture Support for Win32 Controls)

·         SYSGEN_PHYSICSENGINE (Gesture Animation Support)

·         SYSGEN_CONNMGR (Connection Manager)

·         SYSGEN_XAML_RUNTIME (Silverlight for Windows Embedded)

·         SYSGEN_IESAMPLE_EXR (Internet Explorer 6.0 Sample EXR Browser)

·         SYSGEN_IE_TILEENGINE (Internet Explorer 6.0 Tile Engine)

·          SYSGEN_IE_FLASHLITE (Flash Lite Plug In for IE Browser)

·         SYSGEN_SAMPLEXAMLPERF (no catalog item)

 

You can add the following new flags in your OS design to support hardware acceleration:

 

·         BSP_XRPLUGIN_DDRAW

·         BSP_XRPLUGIN_OPENGL

The following new SYSGEN variables and catalog items are specific to optional third-party components:

·         SYSGEN_TENCENT_MobileQQ (Tencent Mobile QQ)

·         SYSGEN_WORDVIEWER (Office Word Viewer)

·         SYSGEN_EXCELVIEWER (Office Excel Viewer)

·         SYSGEN_POWERPOINTVIEWER (Office PowerPoint Viewer)

·         SYSGEN_PDFVIEWER (JETCET PDF)

Important   Selecting Tencent Mobile QQ in the catalog will display a red “x” next to the catalog item instead of a green check mark. This is a known issue with Platform Builder 6, and Mobile QQ will still function correctly. Mobile QQ supports only ARM processors.

10.   Set the correct IMGRAM environment variable for your build to account for run-time images larger than 32 MB. For a CEPC debug build that includes all the new features, you must set IMGRAM128=1.  For a CEPC release build, you must set IMGRAM64=1.
